Computer graphics are a must when designing a website. Graphics software or image editing software are programs made specifically for editing, manipulating and designing graphics and photos on your computer.

Software graphics edit mainly 2 types of file formats, vector and raster, though there are other less used file formats. I would suggest that you learn these prior to learning a graphic program before trying to edit or make them.

Definition of Vector format: Vector graphics are made up of many individual objects. Each of these objects can be defined by mathematical statements and has individual properties assigned to it such as color, fill, and outline. Vector graphics are resolution independent because they can be output to the highest quality at any scale.

Definition of raster format: A bitmap (or raster) image is one of the two major graphic types (the other being vector ). Bitmap-based images are comprised of pixels in a grid. Each pixel or "bit" in the image contains information about the color to be displayed. Bitmap images have a fixed resolution and cannot be resized without losing image quality. Common bitmap-based formats are JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PNG, PICT, and BMP. Most bitmap images can be converted to other bitmap-based formats very easily.

Many graphics programs focus exclusively on either vector or raster graphics, but there are a few that combine them. It is simple to convert from vector graphics to raster graphics, but going the other way is harder. Most graphics programs have the ability to import and export one or more graphics file formats.

There are many programs that do both raster and vector. Whether your suing a free program or you purchase on like Adobe Photoshop, you will need to know this bit of information before learning the program.
